MY TOP TEN FIJIAN WINGS OF ALL TIME

-

1= Rupeni Caucaunibuca Universally recognised as one of the greatest natural talents the game has seen, but enigmatic and moody to say the least. For three or four years scored tries from another planet for Auckland Blues, Agen and very occasionally for Fiji, if he could remember his passport. 1= Joe Rokocoko Still going strong for Racing Metro, logged an exception 46 tries in 68 Tests for New Zealand before being discarded rather cruelly in 2010. Incredible wheels in his early days, backed up by very sound rugby skills and nous. 3 Nemani Nadolo Probably the closest we have seen to a second Jonah Lomu, Nadolo is 6ft 4in and 22 stone, but on many occasions has also shown an amazingly deft touch. Averages a try a match for Montpellier and has logged 19 in 27 Tests for Fiji. 4 Joeli Vidiri Was a complete monster for the Fijian Sevens side of the mid-90s and scored tries for fun for the Auckland Blues before briefly becoming an All Black and also winning a Commonwealth Games Sevens gold medal for New Zealand in 1998. Career cut short by a serious kidney condition. 5 Marika Vunibaka Another huge man and very quick, and like Caucau more than a tad mercurial. Starred for Fiji in three World Cup Sevens and made a massive impression during four seasons with the Crusaders, scoring 35 Super Rugby tries in 50 appearances. 6 Waisake Naholo Originally from Sigatoka in Fiji, Naholo moved from Cuvu College on the island to Whanganui College and was soon talent spotted by New Zealand U20 and the Sevens squad. Has scored 12 tries in 18 Tests for All Blacks using speed, strength and agility. 7 Vereniki Goneva Massively strong runner who is occasionally deployed at centre but is at his very best on the wing. A prolific try scorer – and try maker – wherever he has played although a total of 18 in 49 Tests for Fiji doesn’t quite do him justice. 8 Napolioni Nalaga Spotted by Clermont playing for Fiji at an U21 World Cup they were hosting. Yet another huge, quick man (6ft 3in, 17st 4lbs) who notched up 104 tries during his long spell with Clermont and another 22 during his season and a half with Lyon. London Irish will be hoping he starts hitting his straps for them soon. 9 Vilimoni Delasau Tall but slight by Fijian standards, Delasau was lighting quick and blazed a trail at 7s and 15s for Fiji. Particularly impressive during the 2007 World Cup in France and scored one of the great European Cup tries later that year for Clermont at Wasps. 10 Sireli Bobo Finally called it a day with Pau last year aged 40 after a remarkable career in which, bar a short spell with the Hurricanes, he played mainly domestically in Fiji until the age of 29 before he became a smash hit in France, first for Biarritz and then for Racing Metro. Another giant (6ft 3in, 16st) with gas.
