Clermont win has set us on way says Gibson
IN-FORM back rower Jamie Gibson believes Northampton can salvage their season by winning the AngloWelsh Cup and securing a top six Premiership finish.
Gibson, whose performance levels have remained high despite Northampton’s struggles which culminated in the sacking of rugby director Jim Mallinder, insists last week’s thumping of French aces Clermont Auvergne has provided notice of their intent.
Gibson told The Rugby
Paper: “It’s been a hard season to endure and I hate losing, but I’m still enjoying my rugby and believe we can turn our campaign around.
“The three months of results up to New Year wasn’t a reflection of our squad, but we’ve got some energy back in our play and to beat one of the biggest teams in Europe in Clermont – and beat them well – was a great boost to confidence for all of us. “If we can build on that in the Premiership, who knows where we’ll be in March and April, and we’re also at the top of our Anglo-Welsh Cup group so that will become a really big target now.
“There’s still an awful lot for us to play for and, personally, I feel I’m in pretty good form in what is a good back row. We still feel the top six is achievable.”
Gibson regrets the manner of Mallinder’s exit, adding: “A lot of people will feel they let Jim down massively and there’s always a sense among players that they are responsible for losing.
“Coaches are often the ones who carry the can when things go wrong, but rugby goes on and I’m sure Jim will bounce back quickly once he’s refreshed.”
Meanwhile, Gibson believes fired-up forward partner Courtney Lawes will put Northampton’s woes behind him and play a leading role for England.
Gibson added: “Courtney was magnificent for the Lions last summer and he’s stepped up another level in a Saints side that’s been struggling.
“That shows the quality of player and individual he is and he’s one of the form locks who’ll be vital for England during this coming Six Nations.”
