England call up for Saracens flier Ellery

-

SIMON Amor has named an experienced squad for next weekend’s Sydney Sevens.

Currently fourth in the World Series, England have been drawn in Pool C with Spain, Papa New Guinea and current world champions South Africa.

Both Dan Bibby and Alex Davis return to the side after they missed the opening two tournaments of the series through injury, but Charlie Hayter misses out with a hip complaint.

Amor said: “The ability for us to get a consistent group of players training since Cape Town has been excellent.

“We were slightly frustrated with the way that we performed in Cape Town – our decision making and handling errors were just too high for us to be top-end successful, however I’m pleased with how the guys have performed in training leading up to this next tournament.”

Saracens’ Mike Ellery who played for the England Sevens in the World Series as well as representing England at the 2014 Commonwealth Games will also fly to Sydney. Amor added: “As such a powerful and fast player, Mike brings a real physical edge to the team and is a great attribute.”

ENGLAND Women 7s head coach James Bailey makes three changes to his squad for the Sydney leg. Emily Scarratt, former Team GB captain and Rugby World Cup finalist, is named as captain. Fellow Team GB player Abbie Brown and Sarah McKenna are also named in the side, with both set to make their debuts in the World Series this season.

England winger Jess Breach, who scored six tries on her international debut against Canada last year and recently transitioned into the Sevens programme is also named.

England are drawn in Pool B against USA, New Zealand and Japan.
