Wales send out warning to their rivals

- ■ By SAM JACKSON

WALES produced a clinical five-try display to open their Six Nations campaign with a bonus-point win in Colwyn Bay.

The hosts scored three tries in the first half, scrumhalf Harri Morgan grabbing the first after two minutes. Wing Joe Goodchild and centre Corey Baldwin added further scores with full-back Paddy Dewhurst landing a toothless Scotland’s only points with a penalty.

Flanker Dan Davies and Baldwin, with his second, crossed for late tries to ensure the bonus-point.

Wales head to Gloucester to face reigning champions England on Friday and coach Jason Strange said: “It was a good start to the campaign and we’re pleased with the result.

“We looked like a team playing our first game, but I’m pleased with the effort.

“We needed to be a bit more clinical and we will improve next week. England will always pose a huge challenge, but we will look forward to taking them on away from home.”

The match started with a bang as Callum Carson’s neat step and offload sent 17-year-old Morgan over.

Scotland won plenty of possession, but were let down by a malfunctioning line-out, costing them several scoring opportunities after kicking penalties to the corner.

Dewhurst got them on the board after 20 minutes but Goodchild promptly went over in the right corner from Ben Jones’ cutout pass.

Baldwin profited from a fortuitous bounce to race away after Jones’ delicate chip over the defence for a third try and 19-3 at the break. The bonus-point try came from close range by the ever-alert Davis before Dan Babos picked out the charging Baldwin for his second try of the night three minutes before the end.

“England always pose a tough challenge but that is nothing we can’t stand up to,” said star man, prop Rhys Carre. “We’re looking forward to it.”
