Lam track record led me to Bristol – Stirzaker

- ■ By NEALE HARVEY

AUSSIE Super Rugby star Nic Stirzaker has revealed how Pat Lam’s record of success persuaded him to commit his future to Bristol ahead of other offers.

Stirzaker, currently at Saracens on a threemonth loan from Melbourne Rebels, told

The Rugby Paper: “Bristol had been talking to me for a little while and they’re trying to build a good squad, so the opportunity to be part of that was really exciting.

“I was born in London and was looking to come to the UK. Pat was really keen on having me there. He’s got a great track record in Super Rugby and in Ireland with Connacht.

“With a lot of quality signings like Charles Piutau and John Afoa, plus other guys they’ve brought in, it should be a really good programme to get into. I’ll look to live up to the expectations Bristol have.”

Stirzaker, 26, accepts his hopes of a Wallabies call-up have receded, adding: “I went on the Spring tour in 2016 but didn’t play, so I wasn’t part of their future. I’ve never quite managed to get there with Australia so now it’s time to go my own way.”

Born in England but raised in Sydney by South African parents, Stirzaker qualifies for all three countries and will use his remaining time at Saracens, where he is providing injury cover for Richard Wigglesworth (hip), to prepare for his Bristol stint.

He explained: “I’m still on contract with the Rebels so I’ll be going back there in March, but this is a good chance to have a look at the UK and any Premiership experience I get now will hold me in good stead.

“The game’s a bit different here but guys I know – Luke Morahan at Bristol and Will Skelton here at Sarries – are really enjoying their rugby.

“It’s getting to the business end of the season so I’d like to help leave Saracens in a good place.”
