Quins find perfect response to National Cup loss

- ■ By PAUL HOPKINS Star man

QUINS sneaked a hardfought victory thanks to three second-half penalties from fly-half Jac Wilson.

It was the best possible response to their bitterly disappointing WRU National Cup defeat at Pontypool last week. It was also a third victory over Aberavon this season.

Following a cagey opening quarter, Quins took the lead through Aron Hemmings, who caught a superb high kick by Wilson and simply fell over the line.

Aberavon responded immediately with Stuart Nicholas spotting a gap in the defence to score a well taken try. Stef Williams converted.

With half-time approaching a clever flip pass from Wilson to Shaun Pearce set up another Wizards attack and a chip through enabled winger Steff Andrews to touch down in the corner.

Williams kicked his side further ahead seconds after the interval when Quins were penalised for failing to retreat from an offside position.

But Carmarthen got themselves right back into the match when Dale Ford turned on the after-burners to race through the defence to score. Wilson converted.

Wilson then kicked his side level when the Wizards’ defence strayed offside following a powerful charge forward by Lewys Millin.

With ten minutes left, a powerful scrum by Quins earned a penalty, which Wilson converted. The fly half sealed victory with a late penalty after the Aberavon pack were again driven backwards.
