Six of the best for Coventry as they march on

- By JOHN WILKINSON

SIX-TRY Coventry took another step towards the league title and promotion with an ultimately convincing victory, their 21st of the campaign to equal their club record of three seasons ago.

Cambridge competed for the whole 80 minutes and their defence, especially against the driving maul, made things difficult for the home side, but Cov dominated possession and territory for long spells of the afternoon.

It was an ideal 33rd birthday present for their director of rugby Rowland Winter.

“Cambridge fought for everything.

“They made it hard work for us, particularly at the breakdown but it was a good performance from us,” he said.

“To get a bonus point win and with circumstances elsewhere in the league it’s been a good day, but we need to keep taking things a week at a time and just make sure that we do what we need to do.”

Cov burst in front inside three minutes, Pete White taking a quick penalty and Alex Grove finding a gap in the cover to send in Tom Jubb for a try.

Ben Penfold replied with a penalty but Cov were well on top territorially and as the penalty count mounted against the visitors, Rob Knox picked a perfect angle to carve through for the second home try, again converted by Will Maisey.

A touch of class from Grove created the space for Jubb to race in for his

second try after 33 minutes and a 19-3 lead.

But Cambridge finished the half strongly and George Bretag-Norris crashed through for a try, converted on the whistle by Penfold.

Knox finished off a forward drive to secure Cov’s bonus point midway through the third quarter, with Maisey converting again.

And Cov dominated the rest of the game with their pack in control.

Luke Narraway went in for their fifth try wide out on the right, Maisey tagging on an excellent conversion.

And their dominant pack applied the gloss by forcing a penalty try after a series of scrums three minutes from the end of normal time.
