Williams: Davies has talent to be star for Lions

- By STEFFAN THOMAS

SEB Davies has been tipped as a future British Lion as he prepares to push for a return to the Wales side.

The talented 21-year-old lock, below, won his first Test caps last summer during Wales’ tour clashes with Tonga and Samoa and started the narrow autumn win over Georgia in the unusual position of No.8.

Davies has yet to be involved in Wales’ Six Nations campaign, but head coach Gatland has made clear he will give youth its chance in the meeting with Italy in Cardiff on Sunday.

And the Cardiff Blues man is destined for the very top, according to a top Kiwi team-mate in the Welsh capital.

“Mark my words Seb will win many caps for Wales and he’ll be a future British Lion,” said experienced No.8 Nick Williams.

“When I first joined the club I could see what a special talent he is. He’s really athletic, physical, and has exceptional skills. We have some other really good young talent at the club and most of them will go on to play international rugby.”

Owen Lane is another young talent tipped for a place on Wales’ summer tour of America and Argentina.

The 20-year-old wing has been a revelation in his first full season of regional rugby.

Blues head coach Danny Wilson said: “He’s taken off to a level where we’ve seen him score the tries he’s scored recently and become the first choice winger here.

“Age isn’t really what we are concerned with, it’s based on performance. Owen has come through to be one of our quality, established first-team players who is playing week in, week out at 20.”

Wales head coach Warren Gatland will rest a number of senior players for this summer’s match with South Africa in Washington DC and the two Tests with the Pumas.
