Law keeps his cool as Park edge out Esher

- By KEVIN ROBINSON

DARLINGTON Mowden Park left it until the last kick of the game from Garry Law to win this close encounter.

Esher had registered two penalties from fly half Basil Strang before the visitors constructed a nice try, with scrum-half Niall Saunders burrowing into the corner for the score, converted well by Strang.

Centre Law eventually opened up the scoring for the hosts with a penalty.

Park eventually put Esher under pressure and after a series of pick and drives by the forwards, it was veteran lock Talite Vaioleti who muscled his way over for the score.

In a reversal of fortunes, the hosts scored again, when centre Ben Frankland benefitted from some good tight play from the forwards, finishing off a prolonged period of pressure prior to the interval.

Park, two points ahead, edged the second half but neither side troubled the scoreboard until the final frantic five minutes of play.

Esher thought they’d secured the win, when Strang kicked a penalty to put them a point ahead.

Replacement fly half Warren Seals saw his penalty effort fall short but the home side mounted a last gasp effort with Esher straying offside. Park tried to take a quick tap and Esher wing Tom James was sin-binned from preventing it illegally.

A cool head from Law saw him slot the easiest of kicks for the win.
