Wasps prepared for the final four

Firwood W’loo ...... 0pts Wasps .................. 34pts

- By STUART LEE

WASPS dominated their final regular game of the season to secure their impressive victory over Firwood Waterloo.

With a spot in the playoffs already secured, Wasps started well and Amy Atkinson broke through after six minutes to open the scoring.

Wasps had the majority of possession and territory during the first half and, under continued pressure, Firwood Waterloo’s defence could not hold out.

When the home side’s defence did break it allowed Wasps to build up a healthy lead. Sammy Wong’s converted try on 26 minutes was bracketed by a pair of Danielle Waterman tries putting the visitors 22-0 up.

Firwood Waterloo visibly stepped up a gear and it got the hosts into the opposition 22, although the threat of the home side wasn’t converted into points on the board before the break.

The visitors began the second half quickly, an area Firwood Waterloo have been weak at all season, and it took Wasps just two minutes for Nicola Smith to add her name to the score sheet. Now 29-0 up, Wasps were in a commanding position, highlighted by their forwards turning over two consecutive scrums.

Then, Waterman shook off tackles and tore through a broken field to get her hat-trick on 57 minutes making it 34-0.

Despite a hearty performance from the home side it was Wasps whose try scoring ability saw them come away with the five points.

Wasps move on to the play-offs and a two-leg fixture against second-placed Harlequins.

Although they scored six tries in this game, only two conversions made it onto the scoreboard and Wasps know they will need to be far more ruthless if they are to make a run for the title against a side who have lost just three times all season.
