Meredith strikes at the death to clinch Lucs win

- By ROSS BARNETT

LUCTONIANS overturned an eight-point deficit at half-time to defeat Leicester Lions.

Charles Meredith grabbed the vital try at the death that keeps their hopes of survival alive ahead of next week’s final game against Sale.

A dominant start from Leicester Lions saw Tainne Finn cross the line in the corner after two minutes.

However, a knock-on from the re-start gave the away side possession inside the Lion's half. Luctonians’ play culminated in a penalty try which gave them the lead.

Finn grabbed his second after great work from Alexander Wilcockson who caught the defence off guard with a quick penalty. Finn scored in the corner.

Joshua Watkins broke the Lions defensive line seven metres out and had enough strength to regain the lead for the away side before a Jonathan Boden penalty turned it in Lions’ favour.

A score from replacement Simon Johnson and another Boden penalty gave Lions the lead at half time.

But they hit back, with Rob Crowley starting the comeback to make it a fourpoint game with 20 minutes remaining.

A scrum penalty on the Lions’ five-metre line went the way of the home side but a steal at the line-out allowed Luctonians one more chance.

Lions’ defence eventually caved allowing Meredith to win the game at the death.
