>> Edwards: It’s between Wigan and England

-

SHAUN EDWARDS could be set to make a return to Wigan Warriors after missing out to Paul Gustard on the job at Harlequins.

The Wales defence coach, due to be out of contract after the World Cup next year, is also being touted for a role with Eddie Jones’ England.

Jones’ circle of advisors believe that Edwards could replace Gustard and are interested in speaking to him.

He is also top of Wigan Warriors’ wanted list to replace Shaun Wane, who is set to move to the Scottish Rugby Union at the end of the Super League season.

Edwards, 51, is the most decorated Rugby League player in history, winning a record eight Championships and nine Challenge Cups.

An inductee into the Wigan Hall of Fame, he was voted Rugby League’s man of steel in 1990 and has enjoyed the same level of success since launching his coaching career in 2001.

Along with Warren Gatland he helped guide Wasps to a hat-trick of Premiership titles as well as two Heineken Cups, the club’s most successful era.

Since working for the Welsh Rugby Union after initially being offered a role with England Saxons, he and Gatland have guided Wales to three Six Nations titles.

It is easy to see why Wigan would want one of their most famous sons back and it is a job he would find difficult to turn down.
