Wales flyer aiming high after breakthrough campaign

- By NEALE HARVEY

JOSH Adams’ fairy tale start to international rugby has got him dreaming of a first World Cup appearance.

The Worcester Warriors wing was originally ruled out of Wales’ summer internationals after Premiership Rugby refused to release him for the opening Test match against South Africa which was outside the Test window.

But injuries saw Adams called up for the South American leg of their tour and he scored a stunning individual try in the series-clinching victory over Argentina.

Now the 23-year-old will work overtime to force his way into Warren Gatland’s squad for the 2019 World Cup in Japan.

“I’m desperate to stay involved in the squad leading up to the World Cup,” said Adams, right. “As soon as you’ve had a taste of international rugby, all you want is to be there as often as you can.

“You better yourself as a player and I love being in an international environment. It’s intense and brings the best out of you.

“Being able to play regularly in the Premiership with Worcester, having a good mid-season where I scored a lot of tries and then getting thrown into the mix in the Six Nations was great.

“I managed to get two caps in that which was fantastic. I learnt a lot from that.”

The former Wales U20s wing enjoyed a stunning breakthrough season with the Warriors, ending the campaign as the Premiership’s joint top try scorers with 13 touchdowns. And Adams is hopeful he has done enough to retain his place in the Wales squad moving forward. He said: “It’s been an absolutely crazy 18 months, a bit like a fairy tale really.

“I had two terrific weeks in Argentina and all I’ve wanted to do since I arrived was to try and impress and start the two Tests.

“Thankfully the coaches have seen something in me and I’d like to think I’ve taken my opportunity and hopefully there will be many more in the future.”
