Twomey quits Quins for new Irish challenge

-

SAM Twomey has signed for London Irish ahead of the 2018/19 season.

Twomey’s arrival represents something of a homecoming for the 26year-old second-rower because while he has spent his professional playing career at Harlequins, Twomey grew up as a London Irish supporter.

Twomey, who has played over 50 times for Quins, represented England U20 for two seasons, including an appearance in the 2011 Junior World Cup final.

“I’m delighted to have joined London Irish, a club that I supported as a boy,” said Twomey. “I’m really looking forward to the challenge of playing for this ambitious club and I can’t wait to get stuck in.”

“We’re bringing in a very good player,” said London Irish director of rugby Declan Kidney. “We believe he will strengthen our squad.”

Cornish Pirates have signed Kiwi centre Jordan Payne, 25, on a two-year contract. Auckland-born Payne joins from Japanese side NEC Green Rockets, having previously played for both Waikato and the Chiefs in New Zealand.

Cornish Pirates coach, Gavin Cattle, said: “Jordan arrives in Cornwall with a big pedigree, having performed within certain elite environments, namely both the Chiefs and Waikato in New Zealand and more recently with NEC Green Rockets in Japan.

“A little different to what we already have, his experience will be of use plus he’ll provide versatility as a rangy and powerful centre. Also, importantly, he has an admirable personality that makes him a good addition to the squad.”

Hartpury and Gloucester have come to an agreement for five players to sign dual registration deals with the Championship club.

The quintet all have prior experience playing at the Gloucester affiliate and comprise props Ciaran Knight and Alex Seville, second row Alex Craig, scrum-half Charlie Chapman and utility back Tom Seabrook.
