Strange backing Jarrod for Biggar’s 10 jersey

- By STEFFAN THOMAS

NEW Cardiff Blues backs coach Jason Strange believes Jarrod Evans’ psychic abilities will increase the pressure on Dan Biggar for the Wales No.10 shirt.

The 22-year-old played an instrumental role in the Blues’ epic European Challenge Cup win, with his attacking game and peripheral vision giving them an edge.

And Strange is confident Evans, below, will become Wales’ first choice playmaker in the near future. “I think he’s different to every other outside half we have in Wales in terms of his vision for the game,” said Strange.

“His overall feel of the game is excellent. Sometimes he is so far ahead of everyone else it’s as if he is playing the game in the future. He’s a very smart player with huge potential.

“We have great competition between Jarrod and Gareth Anscombe and it’s up to us as coaches to manage that competition.

“As outside halves we want them to trust their instincts and Jarrod and Gareth both see the game really well.”

The former Wales U20s head coach will form part of new head coach John Mulvihill’s back room team in the Welsh capital.

Mulvihill takes over with the Blues on a high following their Challenge Cup heroics over Gloucester and Strange insists there is no need to reinvent the wheel ahead of the new season.

He said: “What we are trying to do more than anything is enhance the good work Danny (Wilson) put in over the last couple of years.

“There’s lots we need to keep and there’s some things we need to tweak. We need to get better every year and that will be our aim throughout the season. I want the players to play with ambition and intent.”
