FIVE YOUNG GUNS

-

James Grayson (Northampton):

It was touch and go between Grayson and Marcus Smith for the England starting berth at the Junior World Cup in June although Smith got the nod for the final. Grayson has an all-court game, will profit from the day to day influence of Dan Biggar in training and there should be plenty of starting opportunities when the Welshman is away on international duties. His presence should also ensure that Saints resist the temptation of playing Harry Mallinder at ten. He’s a 15!

Ben Curry (Sale):

Twin brother Tom made a good impression in adversity on England’s summer tour to South Africa but the Sale faithful will you that it was Ben who made the biggest impression last season. Has the same tenacious tackling qualities at Tom and some serious gas when required either in attack or defence. Went toe to toe with the much vaunted France backrow in the Junior World Cup Final and emerged with honours.

Gabriel Ibotoye (Harlequins):

There is always a new quick kid on the block and Ibotye is rapid alright but he's much more besides. He knows when to use his power rather than his gas, when to off-load rather than pin his ears back and is solid in defence. Above all else he knows how to find his way to the try-line and dob down, which is not a given in all fliers. Should get some good gametime this season

Marcus Smith (Harlequins):

With players injured, Smith was rushed into first team duty at Quins last season and did remarkably well for the first two thirds of the season before, unsurprisingly, fatigue set in a little. Still only 19 he will, rather unfairly, already be confronted with something of a second season syndrome this time around. If Demetri Catrakilis is fully fit Smith might not get quite so much game time – possibly to his advantage.

Zach Mercer (Bath):

The England U20 captain from 2017 must surely still be in Eddie Jones’ mind with the backrow so clearly England’s problem position. Rangy and fast he covers the ground very well and has made a habit of pulling off remarkable last ditch defensive tackles. Some worry he lacks a little bulk when carrying in attack but he still seems to make a dent. Needs an injury free run this autumn to remind Jones of his presence.
