Summerhill stars for battling Blues

- By JAY BAYFORD

CARDIFF Blues A got their Celtic Cup campaign off to a fine start with a convincing victory over Dragons A at Rodney Parade.

Centre Steven Shingler put the visitors 6-0 inside eight minutes with two well-taken penalties and the Blues never looked back.

Full-back Dan Fish bagged the first try of the evening a few minutes later and Shingler was accurate with the resulting conversion to strengthen the lead.

Former RGC 1404 flyhalf Jacob Botica missed the chance to haul the Dragons back into the game with a missed penalty and he was left to rue that a few minutes later when Aled Summerhill’s superb offload played Tom Williams over the whitewash, again Shingler converted.

Visiting scrum-half Lewis Jones saw yellow on the half-hour and the hosts took full advantage with Rhys Lawrence going over and Botica converting.

But the joy was shortlived as Fish was given too much time and space to go over in the corner.

The Blues continued where they left off after the restart with Williams and Summerhill both touching down in the opening minutes while Shingler added two points.

The Dragons restored some pride late on with converted tries from Taine Basham and Jared Rosser, but it was the capital-based side who claimed the victory on the opening weekend of the new tournament.
