Ealing win again to keep heat on favourites London Irish

- By NEALE HARVEY

DREADLOCKED dynamo Jordy Reid produced a virtuoso display as Ealing hammered home a second successive bonus-point win.

The Aussie flanker, who played for Melbourne Rebels against the British Lions in 2013, bagged Ealing’s last try to cap a rip-roaring effort in which his offloading, support play and intensity around the breakdown proved too hot for Carnegie.

Rayn Smid’s early trydouble set the tone for Ealing and tries from James Cordy-Redden, Pat Howard and Reid helped sink the Yorkshiremen.

Reid said: “I was blowing at the end. We like to play with high tempo and lots of width, and that’s our best performance to date. Three early tries gave us confidence and we’ve just got to keep winning.”

Peter Lydon’s early break lifted the crowd off their seats and Ealing struck first when Craig Willis burst through weak tackling and Smid dived over.

Try No.2 almost followed when Alun Walker’s run and impressive offloading by Reid and Andrew Durutalo created a chance for Reid, but he knocked-on.

Ealing made no mistake on 11 minutes, though, as Lewis Jones’s arcing run ripped Carnegie apart once more and Smid was on hand to claim his second.

Howard Packman raided down the right as Ealing came again and Howard raced clear before Reid offloaded superbly for Cordy-Redden to score.

Shell-shocked Yorkshire penetrated Ealing’s 22 for the first time on 20 minutes and made it count when, after Ben West was yellow carded for foul play, Brendan Cope kicked to the corner, Dan Temm took the lineout and Dylan Donnellan crashed over.

Lydon slotted a penalty for Ealing before Yorkshire went close through Richard Beck after good work from Pete Lucock, Dan Moor and Cope. Carnegie had to settle for three points from Cope, however, reducing Ealing’s lead to 22-10 at half-time.

Carnegie attacked hard after the restart through George Watkins, Chris Elder and Lucock, but a brilliant Elliot Millar-Mills turnover killed their momentum. Back came the visitors, though, and Lydon needed to be alert to deal with Lucock’s grubber.
