Drama at the death as Field pip Hoppers
TWO stoppage time tries from 18-year-old winger Kian Stewart completed an unlikely turnaround to give Huddersfield their first win of the season.
Trailing by 16 points going into the last ten minutes Field’s stuttering backline finally opened up producing three tries to clinch the game by the narrowest of margins.
It was a cruel end for Preston Grasshoppers, who had deservedly led for most of the game, but absolute joy for Stewart, the Yorkshire Carnegie Academy product who joined Field on dual registration at the start of the season.
Two penalties from Will Milner gave the hosts an early advantage before Matt Lamprey crashed over for the first try.
A Tom Davidson penalty was followed by Hoppers’ second try just before the break, Davidson’s well flighted pass taking out the Huddersfield defence and allowing winger Tyler Spence to ease over. Davidson’s conversion took them into the break 15-6 ahead.
Luke Proctor surged over from close range putting the visitors firmly in control. Replacement Joe Green reduced the deficit to 11-22 but it looked all over for the hosts in the 79th minute when centre James Fitzpatrick scored a converted bonus-point try.
Mark Pease began the fightback with a try in the corner before Stewart showed pace and composure with his late, late heroics.
