Delany’s double inspires Waterloo to victory

- By MARK COUGHLAN

A FLURRY of tries early in the second half decided the Premier 15s match between Richmond and Firwood Waterloo.

The visitors crossed three times in nine minutes after the break to turn the score from 7-0 down to 17-7 up, adding a fourth just minutes later to seal the match.

In a tight first half, Vicki Jackson’s midfield sidestep put her under the posts for the only score, and with both sides looking to play from deep, the only surprise was that no more tries arrived before the break.

The second half more than made up for that, though, as Firwood Waterloo scored a long-range beauty through full-back Lauren Delany, a pushover penalty try shortly after, and finally a neat backs move that saw Delany cross again.

With 49 minutes gone, Richmond suddenly had a ten point deficit – and when Georgie Perris-Redding benefitted from a neat grubber ten minutes later, the game was all but up.

However, Richmond retained their spirit and hit back with a Claire Phelps try in the 65th minute to make things interesting, but after failing to finish off a huge number of chances late on, they were left to rue what might have been against a Firwood Waterloo side that were not providing too many chances to score

After last week’s comeback against Loughborough Lightning earned a losing bonus point, Richmond know they need to start stringing 80-minute performances together – while for Firwood Waterloo, a first win of the season came with some impressive running all across the park.
