Wasps struck by Lightning in heavy defeat
WASPS swapped their home and headed to Ealing as part of a double header but it came back to bite them as Loughborough Lightning left with all the points.
Loughborough came out of the blocks quickly and secured two early tries from a period of play and then an intercept by Katy Daley-McLean
Wasps then resumed their normal playing style and put pressure on the visitors with driving lineouts, forcing the knock-on and periods of defensive pressure.
Wasps secured the try out wide to get on the sheet by Claudia MacDonald, her first in a Wasps shirt, followed by forced pressure gaining a penalty – slotted by Lizzie Goulden.
Amy Wilson Hardy got Wasps back on the front foot with ruthless attack and punching holes.
However, Loughborough gained a lineout and drove their way over for another try to lead 21-8 at the break.
Tova Derk got the scoring going in the second half with a flying try on the wing.
And she was followed by another for Abby Dow on the opposite wing to bring Wasps within eight points.
Loughborough finally got the forwards into the game and they bullied Wasps up front, securing a try that was reverted to the TMO.
Minutes later, Loughborough sealed the match thanks to a try from Charlotte Pearce.
Wasps will rebuild before heading north next week to Waterloo, while Loughborough are the only side along with Saracens to have a 100 per cent winning record after two games of the new season. Wasps sit fifth following their win at Bristol in round one.
