Herbert late-show stuns Bargoed in tight encounter

- By DAN ROBERTS Gareth Rees - Carmarthen Quins

CARMARTHEN Quins made it back-to-back victories with a narrow success over Bargoed.

Following an evenly matched first quarter that remained scoreless due to some resolute defending from both sides, the deadlock was broken soon after.

Livewire Quins scrumhalf Gareth Rees was the catalyst as he fed centre Nicholas Reynolds, who tore through the home defence to score in the corner.

Carmarthen extended their lead just before the break - after seeing their scrum go backwards, Rees again fed the back line and some sublime handling by the three-quarters saw Dale Ford cross in the corner.

A sublime kick from the touchline by Thomas doubled the visitors’ advantage.

Bargoed pressed to get back into the game but were dealt another blow following a visiting scrum after the initial phase ended. The ball popped out into the grateful hands of hooker Torin Myhill who raced into the corner to score.

The hosts response was immediate, Duane Dyer breaking through the Quins defence and Jordan Howells finishing off the move, Josh Prosser converting with a superb kick out wide.

The Bulls were rewarded for their efforts in the ninth minute of injury time, Alex Herbert crossing and Prosser converting to reduce the arrears and bag an all-important bonus point.
