Welsh Championship round-up

- By JAY BAYFORD

IT’S a two-way battle at the top of the Championship as Cardiff Met and Pontypool both bagged bonus-point victories.

Cardiff Met ran in five tries in their 38-0 win over newly promoted Ystrad Rhondda, Chris Lewis, Luke Northmore, Zac Clow, Will Gibson and Harvey Scott all crossing.

Reigning champions Pontypool kept pace with a 46-18 triumph over Newbridge. Brendan Lampitt, Aaron Coundley, Craig Attwell, Craig Price, Danny Hodge and Rob Nash alls corted to add to a penalty try.

Lewis Hudd, Andrew Hughes and Josh Congreve hit back for Newbridge with Eamonn Rees kicking a penalty.

Narberth, who started the day level on points with both Cardiff Met and Pontypool, also picked up a win, beating Newcastle Emlyn 15-3 but missed out on the bonus point. Gethin Gibby and Nick Gale got the tries.

Maesteg Quins are up and running after a 32-20 win over Beddau. The One West Central champions saw Sam Mines bag a brace and Dean Ronan add another try but it was Owen Howe’s kicking ability that sealed the win. He converted one of the three tries and smashed five penalties.

Cody Baker and Rhys Owens went over for winless Beddau, who saw Hywel Chatham boot 10 points.

After a huge win on the opening day of the season and a narrow loss to champions Pontypool, confidence was high at Tata Steel but that didn’t stop them falling to a 21-8 defeat at Trebanos.

Geraint Llewellyn went over for Tata while Lloyd Bradley struck a penalty but tries from Harry Davies and Rhys Thomas handed Trebanos the initiative. Rhys Davies kicked 11 points as Bedlinog saw off Rhydyfelin 16-11. Nathan Huish claimed their try while Scott Pritchard bagged Rhydyfelin’s.
