Ford late show is key for battling Chester

- By STEFFAN JAMES

CHESTER made it four consecutive wins with a bonus-point victory at home to Wharfedale.

However, it was the visitors who got on the board first after a penalty kicked from outside half Jack Blakeney-Edwards after two minutes.

The home side then hit back a minute later with a converted try from winger Sean Green.

Hooker Josh Woods then scored Chester’s second try after 20 minutes, centre James Robins on target with the conversation. Wharfedale then hit back a minute later with a score from Rhys Lovegrove.

However, it was the home side who scored the crucial try of the first half, five minutes before half time through second row Shay Owen.

Robins was yet again successful with the conversation which put the home side eight points up at half time.

The deficit was reduced through a Dan Stockdale score early in the second half, and things got even better for the visitors when scrum-half Phil Woodhead dotted down after 57 minutes.

Blakeney-Edwards, handy with the boot all afternoon, converted both tries which meant the visitors took the lead with just over 20 minutes remaining and then landed a penalty.

However, Chester’s David Ford crossed for a crucial converted try with only four minutes remaining to ensure the home side would take all five points.
