Drovers run comes to an end as Williams holds his nerve

- By JON DALY

PONTYPRIDD bounced back from their defeat at Merthyr with a narrow victory over Llandovery in a tightly-contested affair at Sardis Road.

In what was a battle of second against third in the Principality Premiership, tries from hooker Huw Dowden and wing Alex Webber, along with eight points from the boot of flyhalf Lewis K Williams, gave the edge to the Valley Commandos.

It was the Drovers, who had won three on the bounce coming into the clash, first on the scoreboard after five minutes thanks to a penalty from fly-half Jack Maynard.

However it took just two minutes for Justin Burnell’s side to respond with a try as Dowden crashed over with Williams adding the extras.

Maynard pulled the visitors back to within a point with his second penalty after 21 minutes but it was Ponty who would have their noses in front 10-6 at the turnaround after Williams split the posts four minutes before the break.

Llandovery went back in front five minutes after the re-start after a try from lock Joe Powell which was converted by Maynard.

Webber was then over at the other end four minutes later, with the try unconverted, Star man Lewis K Williams - Pontypridd before Maynard kicked the Drovers 16-15 in front on 53 minutes.

Williams’ second penalty on 67 minutes would ultimately be the difference after a Maynard miss from the tee moments later.
