Quins march on with tenth win in succession

- By MIKE PEARCE

HARLEQUINS Ladies put the season of goodwill on temporary hold to comprehensively defeat Worcester Valkyries, and in the process gain their tenth win in a row.

The 48-5 result will have brought back the ghosts of Christmas past for Worcester Valkyries who were beaten 80-7 in last December’s corresponding fixture.

Quins’ first try, their 80th of the season came from Davinia Catlin after seven minutes, and two minutes later Heather Cowell touched down to give Quins a 10-0 lead.

Fly-half Emily Scott added a third on 12 minutes which she also converted to add the extra two points.

Cowell, who has tormented opposition defences all season, dotted down for her second score of the afternoon, her 15th of the campaign in what is proving to be an excellent year for her.

With 22 minutes on the clock, that took the score to 22-0 in favour of the hosts, who were excellent value for their lead.

Despite playing into the wind, it took three minutes of the second half before Catlin crashed over for her second try of the match which Scott converted to make it 29-0.

In a breathless tenminute period, Quins scored three tries through Vickii Cornborough, Sam McCarthy and Jess Breach, Scott converting the last two scores.

With Quins leading 48-0 the final 15 minutes became a stalemate but Valkyries’ Lark Davies scored a well-deserved try in the 73rd minute to make the final score 48-5 to Quins and get the spirited Valkyries on the scoreboard.
