Buckley red costly for Bargoed against Newport

- By IAN GOLDEN

NEWPORT claimed all five points at strugglers Bargoed but it took a red card for them to pull away and claim their win.

Bargoed took the lead on eight minutes. They were awarded two successive penalties halfway inside Newport’s half and Josh Prosser chose to kick the second.

But they were not leading for long. Dai Richards successfully outran his markers on a kick chase and leapt on the ball for Newport’s first try. Matt O’Brien converted.

Prosser kicked a second penalty to bring Bargoed to within a point.

Two successful O’Brien kicks then extended Newport’s lead to seven points. But Prosser reduced the deficit again, before O’Brien kicked another from directly in front of sticks to give Newport a 169 lead at the break.

Bargoed started the second half well. Jordan Purcell dived over in the corner for their first try of the game and Prosser converted to level the scores.

It was just seconds after that score when Bargoed’s Rhys Buckley was sent off for backchat, and that clinched the game for Newport. Three minutes later, Andrew Mann scored in the corner with O’Brien converting.

Two further tries followed, both unconverted scores by Elliot Frewen, the first a classic after he ran the length of the field.

But Bargoed had the final say. Purcell with his second try and Prosser converting.
