Green’s Hundred reach halfway with perfection

- NEALE HARVEY

ROCHFORD Hundred rugby director Chris Green insists there will be no complacency as his club aims to go through the card without dropping a point.

Green’s London One North pacesetters hold the distinction of being the only club in the country to have reached New Year on 70 points with a 100 per cent record, having gained a try-bonus point in each of their 14 victories to date. National Two South leaders Rams also have 70 points, but have played a game more and lost once. Rochford, based near Southend, are on course for a double promotion after taking last season’s London Two North West title in similar style – 22 games, 110 points – and Green is confident the club could cut it at the next level up. Green, right, told The Rugby Paper: “We’re only just halfway through and are aware that we’ve got sides challenging us like Colchester and North Walsham still to play, but it would be a fantastic achievement to go through and not drop a point. “We’re going into uncharted territory but we try to play without fear and even if we do make errors, we still commit to the way we play. “We like to think we can play according to the conditions but we do have a clear philosophy of running the ball and trying to score as many tries as possible. We’ve only kicked one penalty this season and last year we didn’t kick any at all.” Promotion to London & SE Premier (Level 5) would present a challenge, but Green says: “We’ll add two or three players but we won’t just be washing money away and we’re committed to developing the club overall.

“Floodlights are going in next year, we’re looking at a 4G pitch and we’re aiming to ramp-up our coaching throughout the club to create a clear identity and produce our own players. It’s not all about the first team.”
