Morahan ready to extend his stay at ambitious Bears

- By NEALE HARVEY

AUSSIE ace Luke Morahan says he is open to extending his deal at Bristol Bears beyond 2020.

Three-cap Wallaby wing Morahan, 28, has proved a smash-hit at Ashton Gate since joining from Western Force and is on the glory trail.

Last week’s re-signings of Steven Luatua, below left, and Chris Vui, below

right, excited Bristol fans, and Morahan told The

Rugby Paper: “The best thing about it is we’re starting to keep guys together and if you’re going to have success within a club, you need to do that.

“Having those guys resign is good for our future and although I’ve still got another year after this season, it’s only going to get better with core guys hanging around and building towards the achievements we’re all aspiring to.

“I can definitely see myself staying here longer.”

Bristol take on Newcastle today looking to bury the memory of last week’s loss at Sale.

Morahan said: “That was a big disappointment because we’d targeted that game, but we’re happy to be at Ashton Gate to try and kick-start things again.

“We’ve already seen our potential this season and we’ve beaten some top teams and pushed Exeter close, so we’re confident of doing good things.”

While Morahan has been in top form, he has no chance of a Test recall under current Australia rules that preclude most overseas based players.

However, Morahan believes the Wallabies may eventually follow South Africa’s example of recalling top talent like Faf De Klerk and Willie Le Roux.

He said: “It’s difficult because South Africa has greater depth and a bigger love of rugby, whereas in Australia we have to fight a number of codes and were the Wallabies to include overseas players, it could weaken domestic rugby.

“But at some point, with the way rugby is becoming more of an international sport in terms of players playing all over the place, there may have to be a change of strategy in how to get the best players playing for our country.

“Even the Kiwis are becoming concerned because players want to play in top leagues, which are up here in the North now.”
