Davies becoming a triple threat for World Cup

- STEFFAN THOMAS

SEB DAVIES believes his versatility can be a point of difference as he bids to make Warren Gatland’s Wales World Cup squad.

The Cardiff Blue is primarily a lock, but he has also figured for his country at blindside flanker and put in a big shift at No.8 against Tonga in November.

Gatland has challenged each of his squad members to stand out from the crowd with World Cup squads limited to 31 players.

“Being able to play so many positions won’t do my cause of getting into the World Cup squad any harm,” said the seven-cap 22-year-old, right.

“It was tough the first couple of times I went between positions because it was unfamiliar to me. But I’ve got used to it and I fitted straight in.

“I think it makes me a better player because I’ve learnt different skills from different positions. The more positions you play, the better you get.”

The Blues have endured a tough time of late having been eliminated from the Champions Cup after back-toback defeats to Saracens. But Davies insists their performances against the English champions can be built on as they target a return to Europe’s elite competition next season. He said: “It’s very important for us to climb the PRO14 table over the Christmas period. We need some momentum and to build our points up. We took a lot of confidence out of our performances against Saracens. The first 40 at Allianz Park was our best defensive performance of the season so far.

“We just need to play the way we did against Saracens for 80 minutes and we’ll be a tough team to beat.”
