Five-try Brecon take charge of East

- By JAY BAYFORD

BRECON are now in control of the One East title race following their thrilling five-try 37-30 win over Blaenavon.

Darren Witcomb led the way with a double while Dafydd Edwards, Davey Herdman and Elgan Jones backed him up. Dean Gunter added the rest from the kicking tee.

The win saw Brecon leapfrog Brynmawr and

Penallta – both not in action – to the summit with the only 100 per cent record in the league.

With Llandudno not playing, Pwllheli closed the gap at the top of One North to three points with a 17-15 win over Caernarfon.

Tom Parry, Carwyn ap Myrddin and Gareth Williams edged Pwllheli – who still have a game in hand on leaders Llandudno – to victory as they extended their winning run in the league to nine games.

Daniel Williams knocked over a conversion, which proved crucial in the end.

Liam Leung and Sion Owen hit back for Caernarfon, who saw Meirion Jones kick five points. Reigning champions

Nant Conwy are ten points adrift of Llandudno and seven behind Pwllheli.

Glynneath’s perfect record in One West came to an end as Ystalyfera sealed a 16-3 win to go top.

The ‘Fera’s only defeat in the league this season came at the hands of Glynneath in September so they were able to get their revenge.

Jack O’Reilly gave Glynneath an early lead but Steff Castle equalised with a penalty of his own before he added the conversion to Steffan Jones’ try.

Castle then sealed the win with two more penalties.

In One East Central, Glamorgan Wanderers kept hold of top spot with a 21-9 triumph over Dinas

Powys, however, Rumney remain right behind them following their 27-14 win over St Joseph’s. Felinfoel strengthened their grip on top spot in One West as they saw off Llangennech 29-16.
