Deadly Davis in for two as Albion cruise

- By NICK BURT

PLYMOUTH emerged with the victory over Cambridge in a fairly close encounter, scoring the vital bonuspoint try in the 80th minute.

The game was a match of contrastinghalves. Cambridge started the stronger and a high tackle enabled Ben Penfold to kick an easy three points.

But on eight minutes Plymouth hit back from a good catch and drive, with Paul Davis dotting down.

However, shortly after George Mills uncharacteristically missed a tackle which led to Robert Conquest scoring under the posts for the visitors. Penfold converted to make it 7-17.

At this point, Cambridge were in the ascendancy with Penfold kicking astutely for position and putting Albion under pressure, although Matthew Shepherd did manage to claw three points back just before the half time interval.

The second half saw a revitalised home team. Immediately after the restart, Davis was driven over under the posts for Shepherd to convert and bring the scores level.

Cambridge just couldn’t get out of their half and further tries by Josh Skelcey and replacement hooker, Jamie Salter finally put paid to their efforts – although Josef Green did pull one back.

Kieran Hallett, the head coach said: “We stayed calm and executed. We gave ourselves the chance to win the game.”
