Resilient 13-man Esher see off Caldy

- By BRADLEY ADAMS

ESHER held on with 13 men for the final five minutes to complete a backs-against-the-wall victory over Caldy.

Cameron Gentles was carded for a high tackle with nine minutes remaining and then Max Berry was added to the sin bin for a side entry.

But it was replacement Calum Waters, darting brilliantly through the inside of the Caldy defence, who made the difference on 64 minutes.

Esher led at the break but found themselves trailing with half an hour to go.

Caldy bundled forward from a line-out on five metres and Nyle Davidson was able to score his second try of the match.

His first had come on the stroke of half time, Davidson rewarding his side’s dominance by making the most of a penalty advantage and scrambling the ball over.

Despite the visitors having the majority of play, it was Esher who stormed into a lead after just two minutes through Kariym Irving, who broke down the left wing to latch on to a perfectly weighted kick.

But it took some remarkable resilience from the hosts’ defence to remain ahead, absorbing several minutes of pressure.

They eventually broke out through Chris Arnold’s kick forward and Esher were ruthless in attack.

George Simpson’s searing run across field set up Izaiha Moore-Aiono, who offloaded outside to Tom James to dot down.
