Penaltry try at the death gifts Cardiff bonus point

- By ROB COLE

CARDIFF left it late – the fourth minute of injury time – to pick up a much needed bonus-point to hoist themselves into second place in the table.

Two Aled Thomas penalties either side of a great team try, started from their own 10-metre line and scored by Steff Marshall, gave Quins a wonderful start.

But they found themselves 16-13 in arrears at the break. Cardiff ’s kicking game gave them better field position and in outside half Gareth Thompson they had a real point of difference.

As well as kicking three first-half penalties he also made the break from a scrum on his 10-metre line that paved the way for wing Tom Williams to score at the posts.

Thompson converted and the fightback was underway.

Thompson and Thomas exchanged penalties after the restart, but then Carmarthen lost flanker Ed Siggery to a yellow card for an illegal clearout at a ruck. Two minutes later Cardiff No. 8 Morgan Allen pounced from close range.

Jack Roberts then raced through a gap for a try at the posts and the final six minutes were all about the bonus point.

It eventually came after a series of scrums on the Quins line.

With their scrum under pressure it was only a matter of time before referee Elgar Williams lost patience with the Quins forwards and he duly awarded a penalty try after the fifth reset. Star man Gareth Thompson - Cardiff
