Penallta beat the champs to move clear

Welsh Division One round-up

- By JAY BAYFORD

THE One East title race took a twist as defending champions Brynmawr slipped to a 14-10 defeat to title rivals Penallta.

Ryan Davies and Gareth Edwards got the all-important tries that saw the Pitmen move four points clear of the current WRU National Plate champions.

Laurence Pritchard added both conversions, which proved crucial.

Brynmawr hit back with a penalty try and a Liam Butler penalty but couldn’t prevent falling further behind in the title race.

Brecon continue to lead the way after a comprehensive 35-0 win over Dowlais.

Brothers Ryan and Jonathan James both touched down and they were joined on the scoresheet by Elgan Lewis, Lewys Cooke and Tudor Roderick as Brecon opened up a five-point lead.

Dean Gunter was accurate with all five conversions.

Brecon have won all 10 league fixtures but face Brynmawr next month in a crucial clash.

Llandudno put their WRU National Plate exit behind them with a thumping 45-10 victory over Dinbych.

The bonus-point victory saw them edge into a threepoint lead over Pwllheli, who saw off reigning champions Nant Conwy 20-12.

It was a missed opportunity for Rumney in One East Central as they failed to capitalise on Glamorgan Wanderers dropping points in their 17-17 draw with Treorchy.

Things didn’t go to plan for Rumney against Bridgend Athletic. Rob Evans was the architect of their downfall with a try and three conversions as Athletic claimed a 21-16 victory.

The result saw Rumney drop to third with Rhiwbina moving second thanks to their narrow 14-13 win over Llantrisant. In One West Central,

Ystalyfera continued to charge towards the title with a 30-15 win over Skewen.
