No-one will stop Jonny in Cardiff says Tindall

- By GARY FITZGERALD

ANY special Warren Gatland plans to try and stop the lightning quick Jonny May striking an early blow in Cardiff will be a waste of time.

That’s the view of World Cup winner Mike Tindall who is backing the England wing to continue his astonishing try scoring spree when Eddie Jones’ side walk out at the Principality Stadium on Saturday.

May’s 12 tries in as many Tests, including a superb hat-trick in the 44-8 drubbing of France last week, has made him one of the most feared finishers in world rugby.

He has become the fastest gun in the Northern Hemisphere with his quick-fire strikes in Dublin and Twickenham that shattered the confidence of the Irish and French.

And Tindall says Wales will do well to stop May from stealing the limelight again as England attempt to ruin the hosts’ own hopes of a potential Grand Slam. The former centre told

TRP: “Jonny is on fire at the moment and there’s no reason why that cannot continue in Cardiff.

“You just know England will try and utilise his speed straight from the kick off, and get off to a big start.

“I expect Warren Gatland will look at ways to stop Wales falling into the

same trap as the Irish and French did. Gats is one of the world's top coaches and knows how important it is for Wales to start well and make the crowd louder.

“But Jonny is a very awkward player to stop. It’s not just his speed but also his quick feet. He is a dynamic runner with the ball. He has always been fast but he is religious in terms of how much he works on it. He went away to a sprint camp in America last year and that was in his down time. But that’s the sort of bloke he is.

“On top of that he has unbelievable foot work. He rounded French wing Damian Penaud, who was their best player, like a kipper. He stood him up and smoked him.”

Tindall has been bowled over by the intensity and energy shown by England in their opening two victories, insisting the side have put themselves right back on track to make a bold World Cup bid in Japan later this year having threatened to be derailed during 2018.

Tindall added: “When you saw what is arguably England’s strongest team against Ireland you realise just how good they are when everyone’s fit.

“Neither Ireland nor France could live with England’s intensity and energy. It’s the intensity which is knocking opposing flyhalves off their game. Johnny Sexton usually sees the game in slowmo but he certainly didn’t against England because he knew people were coming at him all day long.

“England’s defence has been phenomenal. I’m not sure whether John Mitchell has changed much but there seems to be no stop on their defence. It's just go forward, go forward as fast as you can.”

Tindall is confident England will be successful in Cardiff if they can get near to the same level they have shown in the opening games.

“Cardiff is now being sold as a Grand Slam decider,” he said. “It’s always tough there for any England side and it’s a 4.45 kick off so plenty of time for the home supporters to get into the pubs and fuelled up.

“The atmosphere will be on fire but England will cope ok.”
