Super Spencer strikes twice for Amps ....

- By WARREN KAY

SPENCER Sutherland scored twice as Ampthill kept the pressure on Old Elthamians at the top of the table with a bonuspoint success over Bishop’s Stortford.

Lock Jon Kpoku got the ball rolling for the hosts when he galloped through following a Sam Baker offload to score.

Tom Banks got Stortford on the board with a penalty, the first of his four, before Sam Baker added Ampthill’s second score by scampering over on the left.

Banks’ second penalty kept the away side in it but an Ampthill penalty try for collapsing a five-metre scrum ensured they led 19-9 at the break.

After Banks kicked two more penalties, Sutherland got his first try by blasting round from the right-hand side.

Kicker James Pritchard was successful with the conversion before he added a penalty in the 50th minute.

That was the signal for the visitors to throw caution to the wind and they scored a fine try through fly-half Manu Vunipola, cousin of Billy and Mako.

Hooker Declan Caulfield then scored a converted try but Ampthill hit back as replacement Euan McKirdy kicked perfectly for Sutherland to score.

The referee played five minutes of overtime, forcing Amps to defend for their lives as the visitors threw everything at them but they managed to hold out to the final whistle.
