Lions’ resolve broken by late scores

- By SIMON MOYLE

TWO late tries by Sedgley Park were enough to battle past a spirited Peterborough Lions challenge.

Sedgley Park scored two tries in the opening quarter, one an individual effort from fly-half Stephen Collins and the other a well-worked set piece move which saw full-back Andrew Riley crossing wide out.

The second quarter was dominated by the Lions with Ben Young crossing for a try which he converted on 21 minutes and a lovely individual effort by Suva Ma’asi, again converted by Young on 32 minutes, saw the Lions leading 14-12 on half-time.

However, with the very last play of the first half, Sedgley Park regained the lead with a converted try by centre Robert Holloway to see them leading 19-14 at half-time.

The Lions then dominated the opening 30 minutes of the second half and were rewarded with a nicely taken unconverted try by scrum-half Tom Dougherty.

This left the scoreline 1919 and it remained so until five minutes from time.

Two errors in the Sedgley Park 22 allowed them to gain field position and from this replacement hooker Daniel Maher crashed over on 74 minutes which Collins converted to break Lions’ hearts.

And in the last minute, winger Samuel Lowthion crossed which Collins converted to rob the Lions of a well-deserved bonus point on the day.
