Cardiff keep up the heat with Bedwas success

- By ROB COLE

CARDIFF kept up the pressure on league leaders Merthyr as they bagged a bonus point in a dressrehearsal for their WRU National Cup quarter-final at the end of next month.

The Ironmen may still be in the driving seat in the title race, but Steve Law’s side are ready to take advantage of any slip-ups.

This game was all about picking up five points against stubborn opposition and the fourth try came ten minutes into the second half. Cardiff scored three tries inside the first quarter. Tom Williams raced clear after some neat inter-play with wing Joe Gatt after only four minutes and No.8 Morgan Allen trundled over from a driving lineout.

Ben Thomas then produced some magic to score the first of his two tries with an outrageous dummy. Gareth Thompson converted all three.

But Bedwas battled back with a brilliant try from Dragons centre Connor Edwards, which Joe Scrivens converted off the touchline, and then back row man James Richards crossed in the last move of the half.

Centre Will Rees-Hole barged over from close range to score the bonuspoint try on 50 minutes. Once again Thompson added the extras.

Thomas’ second try, running onto a kick through from replacement outside half Steffan Jones, sealed the deal for Cardiff, but Bedwas had the final word with a consolation try from Rory Harris. Star man Sam Pailor - Cardiff
