Blackmore hat-trick inspires win

- By PAT SHERRY

CALDY arrived at Dillingham Park for this re-arranged match on the type of day you would normally expect in July, and left on the end of a heavy defeat.

From the kick-off by Ampthill deep into the Caldy 22, the ball was passed along the line and eventually found its way to Sam Hudson for a score after just 30 seconds. Ominous signs.

Following strong pressure in the Caldy half Syd Blackmore broke through the Caldy defence to go over under the posts for the first of his three tries.

Approaching the halfhour, Sam Baker also went over under the posts and, from a line-out on 38 minutes, Sam Hanks secured a bonus point with the home side’s fourth try of the day.

Blackmore went over in the corner again on 51 minutes and Ciaran Whyte soon added his name to the scorers.

Shortly after replacing Kevin Barrett as scrumhalf, Euan McKirdy scored his first of the day after a strong run by Soane Tonga’uiha.

Five minutes later, after strong pressure in the home 22, Caldy were awarded a penalty try for their only score of the day.

But Ampthill were not finished yet and on 67 minutes McKirdy got his second try and Pritchard his seventh conversion.

Blackmore then completed his hat-trick on 76 minutes, with Pritchard missing the extras on a big day for Ampthill
