Reds win earns Luc family bragging rights

- By STEFFAN THOMAS

GROWING up Luc Jones dreamed of emulating his father’s achievements on the rugby field and last Tuesday he finally got one over his old man.

The Jersey scrum-half is the son of former Wales flanker Lyn Jones, who forged a respectable coaching career with the Ospreys, London Welsh and the Dragons.

Now dad is head coach of Russia, his son dealt his preparations a major setback as he scored a try in helping Championship outfit Jersey Reds to a famous 35-22 win in Moscow.

“It was a great experience,” said Jones the younger, right.

“Russia are preparing for the World Cup and they were looking at their wider squad to see how much depth they have. I haven’t given my dad any stick yet but when the wound heals a bit

I’ll probably get stuck into him! “Growing up I looked up to my dad and he’s always giving me advice on my game so to beat him was pretty special – and to score a try was awesome. “Some of us might never play international rugby so it was great to be involved in a game against an international team going to a World Cup. It’s probably one of the closest games we’ll get to international rugby.

“It was great for Jersey to do well on the world stage especially as we’re such a small island.

“We were also representing the Championship and we’ve proved how good of a league the Championship is.”

Jones is a new signing for Harvey Biljon’s side having arrived from Richmond in the summer.

A former Wales U20s international Jones’ career hasn’t been plain sailing.

After being released by the Dragons he was picked up by Harlequins but eventually had to drop down a level to play in English rugby’s second tier.

He said: “I left Wales a couple of years ago to join Harlequins and then moved to play for Richmond which was a great experience.

“Jersey is quite a small place and it’s good for me. I’m not one for long term goals but it would be great to move back to Wales at some point in my career.

“I need to knuckle down and play well here. The Championship is a tough league and I’m confident I can improve and push forward with my career.”
