New boys continue to suffer as Sale soar

- By NICOLA KENTON

CANTERBURY’s winless streak contined as they were beaten at home by Sale who recorded a bonuspoint victory.

The encounter started cautiously with neither side getting any points on the board until Edward Leatherbarrow touched down from a rolling maul with 15 minutes on the clock.

Chris Johnson was unable to extend the advantage as the strong breeze sent the conversion wide.

Canterbury grew into the game as the first half continued and they chipped away causing Sale to give away a lot of penalties.

But the hosts were unable to put any pressure on the scoreboard with the visitors’ defence holding up.

After the break Sale found their rhythm and produced a dominant period where they scored three tries in 20 minutes.

Patrick Ah Van was the first to dot over in the 42nd minute, while Jeremy To’a added another on the 50minute mark in the same corner before Oliver Longmore’s score secured the

bonus point. With 70 minutes on the clock, Canterbury scored their first points of the game when replacement Charles Connolly crossed the whitewash and Thomas Best successfully converted to reduce Sale’s deficit to 20-7.

However, the score was just a consolation as four minutes later Raphael Quirke dotted down under the posts for the visitors and despite being affected by the wind throughout, Johnson scored his first conversion.

Canterbury ended the clash with 14 men on the field as try-scorer Connolly was sent to the sin-bin in for a tackle on Dan Birchall.
