Another maximum as prolific Pooler hit the 50

Welsh Championship round-up

- By CARL FIELD Wanderers.

PONTYPOOL notched their 50th consecutive Championship victory as they dismantled old rivals

Neath 59-5. Leighton Jones’ threetime defending champions had the bonus point in the bag by half time thanks to a Lloyd Lewis double plus tries from Geraint Walsh and Darren Hughes.

Five more followed after the re-start with Adam Stratton at the double while skipper Scott Matthews, Clayton Gullis and Martin Luckwell also dotted down.

Rhys Morgan’s unconverted try was scant consolation for Neath in what was their first defeat since dropping into the second tier. For Pooler it made it maximum points from three matches so far.

Narberth are also three from three but have taken two points less. Their team bus breaking down en route to Ystrad Rhondda and arriving late yesterday did not prevent them from recording an 18-8 victory.

Nick Gale booted six penalties to earn four more points on the road for the Otters. Ystrad’s Carl Williams went over for the game’s only try with Rhys Truelove booting a penalty.

Bedwas are the other side with a 100 per cent winning record so far and are a point back in second after a thumping 52-13 home win over Ystalyfera. Jordan Rees, Craig Hudd, Lewis Bowden (2), Mike Dacey, Matthew Williams, Bradley Williams and a penalty try were the Wass’ scorers. Luc Caines went over for the Fera’s only try.
