Fiji flyers put on the style after half-time
FIJI ran in six second-half tries to record their first win of this World Cup and ease past Georgia in Higashiosaka.
Having impressed against the Wallabies in their opening match, Fiji were stunned by Uruguay last week – albeit after only a four-day turnaround following the loss to Australia – and needed a response against the Georgians.
The Pacific Islanders began well with Waisea Nayacalevu’s try giving them an early lead after a neat offload from Semi Radradra, but Soso Matiashvili’s penalty reduced the deficit to four points after an arm-wrestle of a first-half littered with handling errors as a result of the deluge of rain.
But the backs, who scored five of their seven tries, ruthlessly took Georgia apart after the interval with Frank Lomani, Josua Tuisova, Semi Kunatani, Api Ratuniyarawa and two from Radradra ensuring a bonus-point win.
They could have scored more but Nayacalevu dropped the ball with the line at his mercy.
Veteran lock Mamuka Gorgodze crashed over for
Georgia which, combined with Matiashvili’s conversion, closed the gap to seven points before the Fijian flyers let rip.
Fiji’s second biggest win at a World Cup means Fiji are likely to finish at least third in the Pool to gain automatic qualification for the 2023 World Cup.
Potent threats including the outstanding Radradra, who scored twice and provided three assists, plus powerful wing Josua Tuisova and back row dynamo Levani Botia creating all kinds of mayhem, mean Wales must beware ahead of their meting on Wednesday.
