Ravers soar high thanks to early try blitz

- By RICHARD GORE

TWO tries in the first three minutes set Caldy on their way an impressive bonuspoint win away at Hull.

Hull were caught cold as Caldy scored after just one minute through winger Ben Jones, with Gav Roberts converting, and from the restart Hull kicked the ball straight out.

Caldy opted for a quick lineout as both packs ran to the centre expecting a scrum, allowing the visitors acres of room to score a second try through opposite wing Nick Royle.

Hull were in a state of shock but worked their way back into the game and after extracting a penalty from a 12th-minute scrum, they took a lineout which was halted illegally – the referee awarding a penalty try.

Caldy responded immediately and robbed Hull of the ball from the kick-off and set up an efficient driving maul that saw back-rower Adam Aigbokhae credited with the unconverted try.

Hull were soon back on the attack and pressure saw them awarded two kickable penalties in the closing

minutes of the half, with Reece Dean converting one to narrow the interval deficit to seven points.

On 55 minutes, from a scrum near halfway, Hull broke left and full-back Dean put Keane Naylor away on a 45-yard run to the line – Dean’s touchline conversion levelling the score.

Caldy regained their composure, and the lead, when a forward drive was halted but replacement Callum Ridgway emerged to run 30 yards for an impressive try on 59 minutes with Roberts adding the extras for a seven-point advantage.

Hull were always in the game but when they lost the ball near their own line with just four minutes to go, Roberts raced in and converted his own try to see the visitors home.
