Seventh heaven for Lloyd as Lough run riot
Loughboro’ L ..91 F Waterloo ...... 10
LOUGHBOROUGH Lightning thumped Firwood Waterloo to secure their second win of the new season.
Waterloo were not helped by sustaining several injuries early in the day, including Irish international full-back Lauren Delaney who pulled up in the warm up.
It took just two minutes for Lightning to strike through Rhona Lloyd who weaved her way through the Waterloo defence before Bethan Davies successfully converting a penalty from the tee to reduce the gap.
Following this, Lightning squeezed the pressure and some slick handling saw line breaks and scores from Lloyd, Bethan Zeidler and Emily Scarratt.
It wasn’t long before Lloyd struck twice more, showing her speed. Lightning were able to keep the ball for phases with Waterloo crumbling under the mounting pressure.
The second half saw Waterloo up their physicality, especially in the breakdown area however it wasn’t long before Lightning got the scoreboard ticking over again.
Although the scores continued to come from the home side, the rate slowed considerably. Lloyd continued her finishing masterclass, adding another four tries in the second half.
However, there was some hope for Waterloo, who managed to exert some pressure on Lightning into the late stages of the game.
Fly-half Elz Isaac capitalised on this when she dotted down under the sticks following an interception on the 22m; successfully converting her own try.
After the match, Waterloo DoR Neil Ryan said: "I'm proud of the character the girls displayed in the second half when there was much better structure.”
