Forceful Fylde keep unbeaten run going

- By STEFFAN JAMES

FYLDE continued their winning record with a bonus-point win away on the road at struggling Midlands side Hinckley.

The high-flying northwesters can give thanks to a flying start that yielded 21 points, but head coach Warren Spragg was quick to laud his side’s tight game primarily.

“This was another excellent win for us on the road,” commented Spragg.

“I was really pleased with our physicality up front and our scrum was dominant throughout.

“Our ability to spot space in those wider channels was also something that was really pleasing for us.”

The head coach also picked out man-of-thematch Jacob Connor for praise: “I was really pleased with Jacob’s work-rate around the park. He carried well for us all game which allowed us to win the battle at the gain line.”

The first points of the game came after five minutes through a penalty from Fylde’s outside-half Greg Smith. A dropped ball resulted in a Hinckley player playing the ball from an offside position to give Smith the chance to create the 3-0 lead.

The first try came after 17 minutes and it was fullback

Tom Carleton who crossed for the visitors – a quick-tap penalty on the Hinckley 22 allowing Carleton to dive over for an unconverted try.

Two minutes later scrum- half Adam Lanigan went under the posts for Fylde’s second try and Smith was successful with the conversion to give the visitors an early 15-0 lead.

Fylde then crossed for their third try of the game after 21 minutes through fly -half Smith.

A break from 22 metres out allowed him to dot down in style and the No.10 then converted his own try to give Fylde a 22 -0 lead.

Hinckley hit back eventually after half an hour through flanker Jamie Skerrit. An interception from Rory Vowles saw him link up with Skerritt and finally get the home side on the scoreboard.

Joe Glover was successful with the conversion but it was Fylde who then scored their bonuspoint try after 33 minutes through that man again – full-back Carleton.

A chip through from Smith allowed the No.15 to gather and cross for the away side’s fourth and most crucial try of the game.

Hinckley knew that they had to score first in the second half in order to ensure that they took something away from the game.

However, Fylde wouldn’t play ball and crossed for their fifth through centre Scott Rawlings.

A series of pick and goes from the Fylde pack allowed the midfielder to smash his way over the whitewash from close range.

The final try of the game was notched five minutes from the end of the 80 through Fylde winger Lex Botha. Some quick hands along the line saw Botha complete the score and finish off the six-try rout.

After the match, Hinckley head coach Scott Hamilton said: “Fylde are a really good outfit and we always knew that.

“We did not stick to our gameplan and did not implement what we discussed in the week which is disappointing for us”
