Brecon’s Plate win is re-run of their glory day

HOLDERS Brecon booked their place in the last 16 of the Specsavers National Plate after once again getting the better of

Bonymaen in a repeat of last season’s final.

Ewan Williams, Ioan Edwards and Scott Gibson all dotted down for Andy Powell’s men in a 24-16 third-round win, with Dean Gunter adding nine points from the boot.

Joining Brecon in the fourth round are former National Cup semi-finalists

Newbridge, who came through their tie 32-27 at Aberystwyt­h.

Mathew Davies, Joel Gilbert, Lewis Hudd and Eamonn Rees were the Newbridge try scorers, with Rees adding the other 12 points from the tee. Former winners Penallta remain on course to reach a fourth Plate final after thumping Maesteg Celtic 60-12, while Bedlinog, who beat the Pitmen in the 2016 showpiece, are also in the hat after seeing off Senghenydd 20-6.

However round three marked the end of the road for 2018 winners Brynmawr as they went down 22-15 at 2011 runners-up Glynneath.

Greg Roberts and Aled Evans went over for Glynneath, with Jack O’Reilly kicking four penalties.

Ammanford are out, as are former finalists Nant

Conwy, but Felinfoel are through after beating

Kenfig Hill 16-13.

In the Bowl, Aberavon

Green Stars won in dramatic fashion 26-25 at Pontyclun to reach the last 16. Richard Evans, Karl Larkworthy and Kevin Thomas were the try scorers, with the rest of the points coming from the boot of Sean Curran.

Nicky Theaker ran in two tries for Pontyclun with Lloyd Wilkins booting five penalties but, crucially, he also missed one with the last kick that would have sent his side through.

Hollybush were the big winners in the Shield, putting 50 points on Beaufort without reply.

One East Central leaders

Rhydyfelin bounced back from a first defeat as theywon 17-6 at Barry.
