Halaholo’s dancing feet will add wow factor for Wales

- NEALE HARVEY

WILLIS Halaholo’s ‘unique’ ability to see space and break the line will make him a smash-hit for Wales, says former Hurricanes midfield ally Matt Proctor.

Cardiff man Halaholo’s call-up by new Wales boss Wayne Pivac has gone down badly in some quarters, with ex-Wales centre Gavin Henson slamming the residential qualification of both him and fellow Kiwi Johnny McNicholl as “wrong” – a view widely shared within the game.

However, having won the Super Rugby title playing alongside Halaholo in 2016, new Northampton midfielder Proctor said: “I think it’s awesome. It’s great that Wales have recognised his talent and I can’t wait to see him in those colours. His footwork stands him out and he’s elusive for his size.

“He’s been dancing around the backlines here for a couple of years and his ability to see things before they happen and then use his footwork is pretty unique. I’m confident he’ll do well for Wales.”

Proctor, 27, is delighted to have linked-up again with Saints boss Chris Boyd, architect of that 2016 Super Rugby triumph at the Hurricanes. One-cap All Black Proctor believes his experience will augment a predominantly youthful Saints side as they chase Premiership success.

Proctor explained: “I’ve always had a desire to play up here and watching a few of their games last year, I was impressed with their expansive game and desire to throw the ball about.

“Chris was my coach for five years and he’s big on players expressing themselves, which has always been a big factor for me. There are a few young boys around here, but hopefully I’ll bring some experience which will benefit the club and we can achieve something special.”

Hurricanes lost a Super Rugby final in 2015 before claiming the crown and Proctor sees similarities in Saints’ progression, adding: “Buying into a common goal is the biggest strength a team can have. We had that and you get that feeling here as well. They made the play-offs last season and are looking to build on that.”
