Hayhow inspires rampant Rams

- By RICHARD LEWIS

CONNOR Hayhow helped himself to a double as Rams continued their strong start to the campaign with a convincing bonus-point win away to Canterbury.

Against a side still without a win this season, the Rams ran in eight tries in all to move up to third in the table.

They had the bonus point in just 23 minutes, and never let up despite Canterbury running in three scores of their own.

Second row Jamie Guttridge got the ball rolling after just two minutes as he collected Ben Henderson’s offload.

Daniel Smart hit back with a three-pointer before the first of Hayhow’s tries on seven minutes.

Two minutes later it was Tom Vooght going over from a powerful drive.

Canterbury got their first try on the quarter-hour from Tristan King before Jak Rossiter collected Alex Seers’ cross-kick to clinch the bonus point.

A lineout drive allowed Tyler Oliver to respond for Canterbury but Jack Moates had the final say in the half as Rams went in 2917 to the good.

A muscular run from Hayhow saw him cross for a second and effectively end Canterbury hopes of a comeback, although they did score next through Charlie Grimes.

But it was Rams who finished the stronger with tries from Andrew Humberstone – to add to his four conversions – and a second from Rossiter.

The second of those was a stunning score from the winger, dancing out of a number of tackles on his way over.

Rams sit third in the National League One table, just five points off the top.
